The Clockwork Monsters are a group of enemies that resemble chess pieces, whose purpose is to guard the Wooden Thing. Normal Clockworks drop Gears when killed, while the damaged ones in the Ruins have a chance to drop Nightmare Fuel and Thulecite Fragments in addition to gears. Gears can also be used on Broken Clockworks to gain mechanic allies.

Clockwork Knight[edit | edit source]

Main article: Clockwork Knight

The Knight was the first chess piece added to the game, added in the update A Little Rain Must Fall. They were "strategically placed for maximum pain" around the Things, their purpose to guard the things and stop the player. In the newer versions though they only spawn around the Wooden Thing. Their sounds are made by a bagpipe.

Clockwork Bishop[edit | edit source]

Main article: Clockwork Bishop

The Bishop was the second chess piece to be added, first appearing in the Doorway to Adventure update. They can shoot lightning bolts from a distance that are fairly hard to dodge. They drop a Purple Gem when killed, unlike the other chess monsters who only drop Gears.

Clockwork Rook[edit | edit source]

Main article: Clockwork Rook

The Rook was the next chess piece to be added. Rooks take the appearance of a rhino with a snout that looks like a Rook from chess. They charge at the player at an alarming speed and ram them. Their attacks can also deal damage to other creatures and Naturally Occurring Objects. They are able to attack at a close range.

Damaged Knight[edit | edit source]

Damaged Knight.png

A Damaged Knight is a pale, battered knight covered in Nightmare Fuel. It has same base stats as Clockwork Knight and drops 1 Gear, plus a chance to also drop Nightmare Fuel and/or Thulecite Fragments. It occurs naturally in the Ruins, but also has a chance to spawn from Broken Clockworks when they are destroyed.

The player can spawn an allied Damaged Knight (or any other damaged chess piece) by using 3 Gears to repair a pile of Broken Clockworks.

Damaged Bishop[edit | edit source]

A Damaged Bishop was added in the "The Stuff Of Nightmares" Update. It is a battered version of the regular Bishop which occurs naturally in the Ruins, but also has a chance to spawn from Broken Clockworks when they are destroyed. They can also spawn allied if the player repair Broken Clockworks by using 3 Gears. It has same base stats as the standard bishop and drops 1 Purple Gem, with a chance of also dropping Nightmare Fuel and/or Thulecite Fragments.

Damaged Rook[edit | edit source]

Damaged Clockwork.png

Damaged Rook is a pale, battered rook covered in Nightmare Fuel. It has same base stats as Clockwork Rook and drops 1 Gear, 60%  to drop Nightmare Fuel and 50% to drop Thulecite Fragments. It occurs naturally in the Ruins, but also has a chance to spawn from Broken Clockworks when they are destroyed.

The player can spawn an allied Damaged Rook (or any other damaged chesspiece) by using 3 gears to repair a pile of Broken Clockworks. Even as allies, Damaged Rooks are very destructive and caution should be exercised when fighting enemies.
