The Desert biome is found in the Reign of Giants DLC. Commonly found in this biome are Hound Mounds, Tumbleweeds, Cacti, Buzzards, and Boulders. Occasionally there are Spiky Trees, Spiky Bushes, and Grass Tufts. In each world there is also one herd of Volt Goats. The Desert is mostly covered with Sandy Turf, though it does have large patches of bare ground as well.

Deserts are commonly found as a standalone biome at the edge of the world, rarely manifesting itself in the mainland between other biomes. This is the only location where the player can find Hound Mounds and Tumbleweeds.

Hound Mounds are most often found in a single cluster in this Biome, surrounded and interspersed with regular and Gold Vein Boulders. Given its large area, it is a common place to find at least one of the Things or a major world feature like Maxwell's Door.

The desert has a chance to contain an Ice Box trap Set Piece. This Ice Box trap will start Summer rather than Winter.

Deserts can be an abundant source of many useful items, including: Hounds, from Hound Mounds, which can be a good source of Hound's Teeth; Tumbleweeds, which are a good source of Twigs and Grass, even during Winter, and also can contain many other valuable treasures; Boulders, good for a source of Rocks, Nitre, and Gold; Bones, which can be broken for Bone Shards and Hounds Teeth; Cacti, which are a source of Cactus Flesh and Cactus Flowers; and Volt Goats, a source of Meat, Volt Goat Horns, and Electric Milk.

In Don't Starve Together there are two desert biomes. The first is similar to the single player desert and contains a Set Piece only found in this biome which contains multiple Magma pools and is the only place where the Dragonfly spawns, regardless of the season. This biome also contains Tumbleweeds and multiple Hound Mounds. The biome can be easily identified by its short and stout cacti.

The second desert biome is usually separate and smaller in size than the Dragonfly Desert, though it can be adjacent to it. It differs from the Dragonfly desert in several ways. This biome does not contain Tumbleweeds, Hound Mounds, Magma Pools, or the Dragonfly. The Antlion spawns in this desert during Summer, and there's a Lake in an oasis Set Piece. Sandstorms occur in this biome exclusively during Summer. The Antlion desert can be easily identified by its taller cacti and the presence of the oasis set piece. Cacti in the two desert biomes are visually distinct but functionally identical.

Prototype.png Tips[edit | edit source]

  • In Don't Starve Together the Antlion desert is an ideal location for a base due to the high prevalence of cacti, natural protection from smoldering provided by Sandstorms, and easy access to trinkets and the Antlion during Summer
