Nitre is a Mineral resource obtained by mining smooth Boulders, which will drop at least one (along with other minerals) upon being mined. It also occasionally falls during underground Earthquakes. It can be used to craft Salt Licks and Gunpowder.

In the Reign of Giants DLC, it can be used to make Endothermic Fires, Endothermic Fire Pits and the Morning Star. Endothermic Fires can also be refueled with Nitre. Nitre can also be obtained by digging up a Moleworm's Burrow. It can be used as a fuel for Ice Flingomatics to refuel 19%.

In the Shipwrecked DLC, it can also be used to make Endothermic Fires and Endothermic Fire Pits, and Nitre can additionally be obtained by digging a Magma Pile. Gold-flecked Magma Piles will drop Gold Nuggets instead of Nitre. Unlike Boulders, magma piles do not have a preset number of Nitre to drop, instead, each item dropped has an independent chance to be Nitre. Therefore, there is a small chance get no Nitre, and a very small chance to get 9 Nitre from a Magma Pile.

In the Hamlet DLC, Nitre is required to craft Lawn Turf and several variations of Hedges. Additionally, Wormwood uses Nitre to craft Compost Wraps.

Don't Starve Together icon Don't Starve Together[]

In Don't Starve Together, Nitre is additionally dropped by Petrified Evergreens and used to craft Booster Shots, Flares and Bath Bombs. Winona uses Nitre both to craft her Generator and to refuel it, while Warly can craft Chef Pouches from it.

Nitre can also be crafted by Wilson if he has the "Transmute Ore Ⅱ" ability from his insight skill-tree.

Placeholder Trivia[]

  • Nitre was added in the A Little Rain Must Fall update.
  • Nitre was changed to be dropped by the small, smooth boulder in The End of the Beginning update.
  • Nitre, a.k.a. Saltpeter (Potassium Nitrate, KNO₃), is a common ingredient in creating gunpowder in the real world. It is also an ingredient in fertilizer. Although it cannot be directly used as fertilizer in game, it can be used to craft Compost Wrap, which can be used as fertilizer in Don't Starve Together.
