Tree

Trees are Plants generated randomly with each new map and can be naturally found anywhere except in Rockyland or Savanna Biomes (although they may still be planted there). Evergreens are most commonly found in Forests and Grasslands.
Trees are the primary source of Logs and Pine Cones. They can be chopped down with an Axe or by Pig followers. A felled tree leaves behind a tree stump, which can be dug up with a Shovel for an extra Log.
Evergreens have a 4-stage life cycle (small, medium, large, and aged) which they continuously cycle through. Once cut, stumps do not regrow into trees nor do new trees spawn naturally; the only way to get more trees is to plant them with Pine Cones. Tree stumps, however, are treated as normal trees by the game: they are shown on the map as normal trees and they change their size from small to aging continuously like trees do. Planting a Pine Cone will produce a sapling tree which will grow into a small Evergreen and follow the life cycle until it is chopped down or burned. The number of strikes needed to chop down a tree varies by its size and state. Basic Axe can chop down small trees in 5, medium trees in 10, and large trees in 15 strikes. Aged or Burned trees take a single strike to be chopped down.
When a tree is chopped down, a nearby Evergreen may stand up and become a Treeguard. After day 3, each tree felled has a 1.3% percent chance of spawning a Treeguard from a nearby Evergreen, including trees you have planted yourself. The Treeguard will chase whoever chopped down trees near them until the player plants enough Pine Cones to pacify it or runs beyond the Treeguard's attack range. Since Treeguards are quite slow, they're relatively easy to outrun. Note that a pacified Treeguard will "hibernate" into a normal Evergreen - it will appear as a normal Evergreen but will actually be identified as a Treeguard when hovered-over. Treeguards that have been simply outrun will wander about in their active form.
Burning
If a tree is exposed to fire (such as from an uncontrolled Campfire, a Torch, or other nearby burning object) it will quickly ignite and can rapidly spread to nearby trees or other plants. Forests in particular are prone to large forest fires. The damage caused by fire will kill small creatures like Birds and Rabbits almost instantly and can damage the player if they stand too close. Burning trees produce a great deal of light and heat, however they burn out quickly. Once a tree is consumed by fire, it will be reduced to a burnt tree, which can be chopped down with an Axe to produce a piece of Charcoal (and occasionally a pine cone or two). In DST, sometimes a burnt tree will drop two pieces of charcoal. Stumps that have been burned will turn into Ashes.
Petrified Trees
In Don't Starve Together, Evergreens may petrify after an unknown period of time, followed by an announcement from the character. Petrified Trees are mined instead of being chopped, and may result in Rocks, Nitre and Flint.
There are Minimap icons for tree stumps and burnt trees instead of showing as normal trees.
Bugs
- When chopping down a burning tree (not one that has already burnt) with any Axe or as a Werebeaver, the game will sometimes crash, but when it doesn't, the tree will drop as many Logs and Pine Cones as listed above using only 1% of the used Axe, as if it was a burnt tree. This bug was fixed in the Reign of Giants DLC.
- When dying near a tree, items will sometimes land on top of it in an unreachable location.
- When rapidly chopping down a tree by left-clicking, sometimes the player's Axe will say 0% and take up one inventory space.
- Sometimes, whilst a tree is burning, it will grow and appear as a nonburnt tree, but when cut down drops charcoal.

Birchnut Trees are Plants found in the Reign of Giants DLC. They are found mainly in Grasslands and Deciduous Forests. When chopped, they will yield 1-3 Logs and up to 2 Birchnuts, depending on the season.
If cut in its prime (the largest form) it will yield 2 Birchnuts in Autumn (colored leaves), 1 in Spring and Summer (green leaves), and no Birchnuts in Winter (leafless). Standing under one offers moderate wetness protection from Rain, and slows Overheating.
Poison Birchnut Tree
When cutting down a fully sized Birchnut Tree that drops Birchnuts from day 3 and after, there is a small chance that other Birchnut Trees in the area will "awaken" and begin attacking anything in the area, unless it is Winter. This chance increases with the number of days survived from 3% on day 3 to 33% on day 70. After enough time passes (minimum one day,) Poison Birchnut Trees will calm down and return to their normal state. The player can also plant Birchnuts nearby to attempt to pacify them.
A Poison Birchnut Tree can spawn up to 5 Birchnutters to attack the player or nearby Mobs. They will also do a root attack, behaving similarly to tentacles, that will attempt to home in on the player's position.
Unlike the somewhat similar Treeguards, Poison Birchnut Trees have to be felled with an Axe (12 swings) or any other method that will destroy the average tree. Torching a Poison Birchnut Tree spawns another, final wave of Birchnutters.
A Poison Birchnut Tree will drop 1 Living Log and 3 Birchnuts and has a 20% chance to drop an additional Living Log or Nightmare Fuel. Its stump can also be dug up to yield an additional Living Log.
Don't Starve Together
In Don't Starve Together, the chances for Poison Birchnut Trees spawning is dependent on the season. Birchnut Trees will start losing their leaves during the last 2 days of autumn.
Season | Chance by World Age | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
4-20 | 21-35 | 36-70 | 71+ | |
Autumn | 3% | 7.5% | 15% | 16.8% |
Winter | 0% | 0% | 0% | 0% |
Spring | 1.6% | 4% | 8% | 8.96% |
Summer | 0.66% | 1.65% | 3.3% | 3.696% |
Tips
- Birchnut Trees are a good source of Living Logs, Nightmare Fuel and Birchnuts rather than a source of Logs due to the large amount of Poison Birchnut Trees that can spawn from a minimal amount of chopping.
- It is advised to bring a group of befriended Pigs when chopping Birchnut Trees. As soon as a Poison Birchnut Tree is spawned, the allied Pigs will attempt to chop it down as well as fight the Birchnutters.
- It is best to chop down Birchnut Trees in Autumn, since they drop an extra Birchnut, which means the player can more efficiently make a Birchnut Tree farm, or plant one Birchnut and use the other for a Trail Mix.
- Poison Birchnut trees can be an effective way to gather Birchnuts and Twigs. Birchnutters drop Birchnuts 40% of the time, and twigs the other 60%.
- If left for a while (but not too long), Poison Birchnut Trees will stop attacking and spawning Birchnutters, making them safer to chop down.
- Mobs like the Bearger and Clockwork Rook will cut down Poison Birchnut Trees as easily as regular trees, making them especially effective for farming Living Logs.
Trivia
- The name "Birchnut" is a portmanteau of the words "Birch" and "Chestnut".
- Birchnuts also look similar to chestnuts.
- In the first version of the Reign of Giants, the Birchnut Tree was simply named "Deciduous Tree", it is still named as such in the game's files.
- Chopping a Poison Birchnut Tree can spawn even more Poison Birchnut Trees. This is because Poison Birchnut Trees are considered fully grown.
- Pigs and other mobs that are able to smash structures, are the only mobs that can destroy Poison Birchnut Trees.
- The similarities between the Poison Birchnut Trees and the Treeguards has led people to refer to them as 'Birchnut Treeguards' and 'Birchguards'.
- Despite having white bark, the tree drops normal logs with brown bark.
- During Autumn, the tree's leaves will change colors (red, brown, or orange) and can be seen falling off. This mimics real world deciduous tree color changes in the fall or the autumn.
- Wilson's quote upon examination of a Birchnut Tree is different from what he would say about an Evergreen ("It's all Leafy. Most of the time." compared to "It's all Piney.").
- Birchnut Trees resemble the truffula trees from The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.
- Woodie's power extends to Poison Birchnut Trees; he can cut one in six swings.
- In the World Customization Screen, Poison Birchnut Trees are also called Deciduous Monsters.
Bugs
- If the player is too far away from the Birchnut Tree when it turns passive again, it will continue to appear with the poison build and drop the poison build's loot, though it will no longer fight the player.
- If the player survives a night near the limits of the tree's attack range, there is a slight possibility that the tree will be pacified the next day.
- If the player waits until dusk, sometimes the tree doesn't aggro and it can be cut down without any consequences.

Spiky Trees are found only in the Marsh. Instead of dropping Logs when chopped like other trees, Spiky Trees drop Twigs with only a 20% chance to drop a Log. Also, these trees do not have a life-cycle (changing size over time). There is also no way to replant them. Like other trees, the stumps of the Spiky variety can be dug up with a Shovel or Regal Shovel to get an additional log.
Reign of Giants
In the Reign of Giants DLC, Spiky Trees can also be found in the new Desert biome.
Bugs
- When chopping down a burning tree (not one that has already burnt) with an Axe of any kind or as a Werebeaver, the game will sometimes crash, but when it doesn't, the tree will drop as many Logs and Pine Cones as listed above using only 1% of your Axe, as if it was a burnt tree. This bug was fixed in RoG DLC.
- When dying near a tree, items will sometimes land on top of it in an unreachable location.
- When rapidly chopping down a tree with left click, sometimes the player's Axe will say 0% and take up one inventory space. This can also happen when fighting a mob such as a spider.

Mushtrees are naturally generated objects that act as light sources inside Caves.
The most common variant is a Blue Mushtree, which can be chopped down, providing 2 Logs and a Blue Cap. Using a Shovel or a Regal Shovel to dig up the stump that will provide another Log or burn it to yield 1 Ash. Mushtrees also come in green and red varieties, which drop a Green Cap and Red Cap respectively upon harvest, as well as a single Log. When set on fire, a Mushtree will eventually burn to a crisp and disappear, dropping 1 Ash and 1 Charcoal. Unlike Evergreens, which drop Pine Cones that can be planted, there is no way for the player to regrow Mushtrees, making them a nonrenewable resource.
Mushtrees are regarded as the easiest way to get Blue Caps. However, Mushtrees also provide a small, but free and unending source of light. Illumination frequently means life or death in the caves, so discretion should be used when deciding whether or not to harvest.
Reign of Giants
During Full Moons in the Reign of Giants DLC, Mushrooms (both in Caves and on the Surface) will turn into Mushtrees. If a Mushroom-turned-Mushtree has been chopped, its stump will turn into a harvested Mushroom spawn point once the Full Moon ends.
Don't Starve Together
In Don't Starve Together, Mushtrees have a blooming state where they produce light-generating Spores. Additionally, a variant of the Blue Mushtree, called the Webbed Blue Mushtree can rarely be encountered. Webbed Blue Mushtree will spawn Dangling Depth Dwellers when chopped down.
Mushtrees also release Mushroom Spores when they are blooming, but their blooming season is different for each variety. Blue mushtrees start blooming at night during Winter. Green mushtrees start blooming at dusk during Spring. Red mushtrees start blooming at day during Summer.
Trivia
- According to Wickerbottom, Mushtrees are regular trees infected with fungal parasites.

Lumpy Evergreens are a variant of the typical evergreen with lumpy and wilted-looking branches. Unlike normal Evergreens, the Lumpy variety does not produce Pine Cones, leading characters to wonder how it reproduces at all. They still have a life-cycle, growing to huge trees and then reverting to small ones. Also like normal trees, lumpy ones can become Treeguards, which will have the lumpy appearance as opposed to the standard treeguard look. Like other trees, the stumps of the Lumpy Evergreen variety can be dug up with a Shovel or Regal Shovel to get an additional log.
When spawned naturally in Survival, Lumpy Evergreens only appear in Forest biomes (the dark brown terrain), however in adventure mode they may be found elsewhere. Often entire forests of Lumpy Evergreens will be found, however they usually do not mix with standard Evergreens.
Currently the number of Lumpy Evergreens generated in a world are not affected by the "Trees" slider setting in the custom world settings.
Don't Starve together
In Don't Starve Together, Lumpy Evergreens are renewable due to Regrowth, where Lumpy Saplings will periodically spawn in the world.

The Totally Normal Tree is a Tree found in the Forest Biome. It can be chopped down, giving the player 2 Living Logs. The player can then use a Shovel to dig up the stump to gain an additional Living Log. If burned, it will drop Charcoal when chopped just like other Trees.
These trees will have a randomized number of Evil Flowers growing near them. When cutting it down, it will make a groaning/moaning noise with every chop.
Bugs
- Burning a Totally Normal Tree's stump will turn it into a Burnt Totally Normal Tree instead of dropping an Ash. These burnt Trees can't be chopped down; one must use a Shovel to dig it up and receive 1 Charcoal.

Palm Trees are a variety of Tree found in Beach biomes in the Shipwrecked DLC. When chopped down with an Axe, they yield Logs and Palm Leaves. Fully-grown Palm Trees will grow Coconuts, which will also drop when the tree is cut down. The Coconuts can be planted to create Palm Tree Saplings, which grow into new Palm Trees. They can also be split into 2 halves with a Machete, allowing them to be used as food, however they can no longer be planted once split. As with almost all trees (with the exception of the Mangrove Tree), the stump may be dug up with a Shovel to yield another Log.
Palm Trees may be destroyed by Strong Winds.
Similar to its Evergreen and Birchnut Tree counterparts, when a Palm Tree is chopped down, there is a chance that some nearby Palm Trees may become Palm Treeguards. Palm Treeguards will not spawn before day 4 starts. Chopping down a Palm Tree has a 1/75 chance to spawn Palm Treeguards. Provided that there are enough Palm Trees around, before day 31, 3 Palm Treeguards will spawn. Starting from day 31, there is a 50% chance a 4th will also spawn. After day 80, a minimum of 4 will spawn, with 50% chance to spawn a 5th.
While Chopping down fully grown Palm Trees, there is a 1% chance for a Coconut to fall on every strike. The Coconut deals 20 damage, which can be partially mitigated by wearing Armor. The fallen Coconut stays intact and can be collected.
Tips
- The Lazy Forager can catch falling Coconuts before it can damage the character.
Trivia
- Strangely, palm trees grow huskless coconuts.
- When planting coconuts that are very close to become rot they can actually become rot on the ground if they do not reach the first stage before their rot timer runs out.

Jungle Trees are a type of Tree found only in the Jungle biome in the Shipwrecked DLC. They are by far the largest trees. When chopped down they yield Logs and Jungle Tree Seeds. Chopping any size Jungle Tree has a 50% chance of trying to spawn Snakes. While there is a chance to get no snakes, a maximum of 1 to 3 Snakes can be spawned depending on the size of the Tree. After day 3 Poison Snakes can be encountered this way. If the medium-sized and fully grown Jungle Trees didn't try to spawn Snakes (even if no Snakes were actually spawned), they will spawn a food item. This food item for medium-sized Jungle Trees is always an Egg, while fully grown Jungle Trees drop either Eggs or Bananas with equal likelihood. Like most trees, the player may use a Shovel to dig up the stump to obtain an extra Log.

Mangrove Trees are a type of Tree in the Shipwrecked DLC.
It is found growing in the waters of the Mangrove biome and can only be accessed by boat or raft. It has a distinctive appearance with a bulbous trunk and roots that begin above the waterline.
When chopped down, the player receives 2 Logs and 1 Twig, 2 Logs and 2 Twigs or 3 Logs and 3 Twigs, depending on the tree's size.
As of now, there is no way to plant new mangrove trees, but they will regenerate fairly quickly so long as they aren't completely destroyed, so despite the trees not being inherently renewable, their resources are as a result.

Trivia
- The Twiggy Trees were re-skinned in the Rev. 180814.
- Based on its leafs and pine cones, it's probably based on an araucarian.
- Twiggy Trees used to be able to get Diseased and would die after a few days as they were not meant to co-exist with Saplings. In A New Reign however, this feature has been removed.
